A lesson in how to turn a respected, but still fairly cult indie band into a worldwide phenomenon in a fraction under four and a half minutes. The sound of “Losing my Religion” was hardly a departure for the boys from Athens, Georgia, but something clicked. Maybe the wider record buying public were finally ready for them, maybe it was the major label marketing? Either way, it made Michael Stipe the rock n’ roll royalty he was born to be.
