“I ONLY WENT WITH YOUR MOTHER ‘CAUSE SHE’S DIRTY”
Arguably the smartest Britrock lyricist this side of Lydon and Morrissey, “Kinky Afro” is the pinnacle of Shaun Ryder and the Happy Monday’s talents. Sure, Ryder had already written some great tracks and would do so again with Black Grape, but on Kinky Afro, he took up a theme left off by The Who’s “Substitute” and a thousand rap lyrics, and struck a blow for the millions of kids from broken families. Musically indebted to the Beatles, but lyrically as razor sharp as anything fellow Manc, Morrissey had written.
